Appointment letters to four new Malaysian envoys

Four new Heads of the Mission of Malaysia received their Letters of Credence from His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah in a ceremony held at Istana Negara on Tuesday, 12 July 2022.

The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Kamarudin Jaffar, and Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Amran Mohamed Zin.

According to Malaymail, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah presented letters of appointment to four new Malaysian heads of missions at Istana Negara.

Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah also graced the event.

The newly-appointed heads of missions were Malaysian Ambassador to South Korea Datuk Lim Jay Jin, Malaysian Ambassador to Japan Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, Malaysian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah, and Malaysian Ambassador to Iran Khairi Omar.

Referring to Malaysia`s ministry of foreign affairs official portal, The newly minted Heads of Mission are:

Datuk Lim Juay Jin

Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea

Datuk Lim Juay Jin is a University of Malaya graduate, and he joined the Administrative and Diplomatic Service in 1992. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea, Datuk Lim was Ambassador of Malaysia to Brazil in 2017 and was concurrently accredited to Suriname and Guyana.

Other than the Republic of Korea and Brazil, he used to be posted to the Embassy of Malaysia in Bangkok, Thailand, and the Embassy of Malaysia in Beijing, People’s Republic of China. Previously between 2014 and 2017, he was High Commissioner of Malaysia to Nigeria, with concurrent accreditation to Cameroon, Benin, Central African Republic, Gabon, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea.

At headquarters, Datuk Lim had served as a Director at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) and fulfilled other assignments in Africa and South Sahara Division, America Division, and ASEAN Division.

Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah

Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Datuk Wan Zaidi joined the Administrative and Diplomatic Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994 following the completion of his studies at Dundee University in the United Kingdom. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador of Malaysia to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, he was Chief of Protocol at the Ministry.

As a diplomat, he used to be assigned to the Embassy of Malaysia in Madrid, Spain, the Embassy of Malaysia in Tripoli, Libya, and the High Commission of Malaysia in London, United Kingdom. Over the past years, he also held leadership roles as Consul General of Malaysia in Mumbai, India, and as High Commissioner of Malaysia to Sri Lanka from 2016 to 2018.

Among the tasks assigned to Datuk Wan Zaidi at headquarters previously was Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial) and Deputy Head of ASEAN Logistics Main Secretariat when Malaysia assumed the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2015. In addition, he had a stint at Multilateral Affairs Department and International Cooperation Division.

Ambassador Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany

Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to Japan

Ambassador Shahril Effendi graduated from the University of Kent at Canterbury, United Kingdom. He began his service as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan, he was Deputy Secretary-General for Management Services at the Ministry.

Throughout his diplomatic career, he has been assigned to the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York, the United States, the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei, and the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington D.C., United States. Ambassador Shahril Effendi’s maiden ambassadorial appointment was as Ambassador of Malaysia to the Sultanate of Oman from 2016 to 2019.

In addition, his contribution at headquarters included roles as Director General of Policy Planning and Coordination Department, Undersecretary of Americas Division, and Undersecretary of Regional Cooperation, Social and Cultural Division. He had also served at ASEAN – Malaysia National Secretariat, Strategic Policy Planning Division, and Southeast Asia Division.

Ambassador Khairi Omar

Ambassador-designate of Malaysia to the Islamic Republic of Iran,

graduated from Nottingham University, United Kingdom, and commenced his service as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in 1994. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador of Malaysia to the Islamic Republic of Iran, he was Deputy Director General at the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT).

His prior overseas assignments as a diplomat included at the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington D.C., the United States, and the Consulate General of Malaysia in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as Consul General. His first ambassadorial appointment was as Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Cuba from 2015 to 2018.

At headquarters, Ambassador Khairi had served as Deputy Director General at Policy Planning & Coordination Department and Undersecretary of CLMV & Oceania Division, following stints at America Division, and Southeast Asia and South Pacific Division.
