Palace says Anwar didn’t submit list, advised to respect due process

PETALING JAYA: Istana Negara said Anwar Ibrahim did not present a list of the MPs who supported him, while the King today advised the PKR president to “respect the due process of the law”.

A statement from the comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin did not, however, state what the King would do next, or if he would do anything at all, following the meeting with Anwar earlier today.

In the brief statement, Fadil said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah met Anwar this morning for 25 minutes.

“Anwar Ibrahim had disclosed the number of MPs he claimed to have declared support for him. However, he did not provide the list of names of the MPs to back his claim.

“As such, Sultan Abdullah has advised Anwar to abide by and respect the due process of the law as prescribed by the Federal Constitution,” he said.

He also announced that due to the conditional movement control order (CMCO), the palace would be under a partial lockdown until further notice.

Earlier today, Anwar told a press conference that he had submitted documents, including statutory declarations and confirmation of support from the heads of parties.

The opposition leader had also said the King would go through the documents after which he would be calling up leaders from several political parties in the next few days.

“I appeal to all parties to give the King room to carry out his responsibilities under the Federal Constitution, to go through the documents and, in the next one or two days, call the heads of parties for an audience to get their confirmation and views,” Anwar had added.

On Sept 23, Anwar had claimed that the majority of MPs supported him and that the government of Muhyiddin had “fallen”, which he reiterated today.

Meanwhile, Fadil also said the King was concerned about the spread of Covid-19 and the CMCO that would be implemented in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya effective tomorrow.

He advised the public to remain calm and to practise discipline in complying with the SOPs.

“Even though the latest developments have been quite worrying following the continuous three-digit hikes in daily Covid-19 cases, and the emergence of new clusters since Oct 1, Sultan Abdullah expressed confidence and urged the rakyat to unite and help stop the spread of Covid-19 regardless of their race, religion and political leanings for the safety of all and the well-being of the country.”/free Malaysia today/FMT
